A Healthy Smile Is a Happy Smile!
Preventive Dental Care
Your best defense against dental problems is a good offense. Preventive care includes your oral health routine at home as well as your twice-yearly visits to the Shreveport, LA, office of David N. Austin, DDS.
Brushing & Flossing
The heart of your dental health lies in your home care routine. Our staff is happy to provide you with instruction and education about how to give your mouth star treatment at home. You may think this is only important for kids, but adults need a refresher now and then!
Make sure you are brushing with a soft toothbrush – for two minutes – twice a day. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles look frayed or matted. Floss daily to clean hard-to-reach areas between teeth.
Are you flossing correctly?
Regular Dental Exams & Professional Cleaning
Brushing and flossing at home is a great start to preventing plaque and decay, but you need to make twice-yearly appointments in our office to deep-clean and check your oral health.
At your regular (twice yearly or as recommended by Dr. Austin) visits to our office, we will perform a thorough, professional cleaning. We can reach even the most difficult places between teeth and at the gumline.
During these appointments, Dr. Austin will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer screening. You may receive digital dental x-rays so that the doctor can see between teeth and below the gumline.
Children between the ages of 6-12 may get sealants at their routine visits. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of molars during the most cavity-prone years.
“Children aged 6 to 11 years without sealants have almost three times more first molar cavities than children with sealants.”
